the Boxer STORY

The Boxer wasn't the first Nila fixture, but it was the one that escorted us into the new era of high-intensity, long-throw LED fixtures bright enough to compete with HMIs. Most people don't know it, but the Boxer's form factor was actually dictated by the US House of Representatives. We won the bid to replace the TV lights in the House in 2010, at which time there were no Boxer fixtures. The bid request dictated that the replacement lights had to fit in the motor yokes that the old lights currently occupied. So, to win the bid, we designed an all-new fixture just for the House - The Boxer.

It wasn't called the Boxer at that time. In fact, it was quite a bit different from the production model we would later sell. It had an external power supply and a curved rear housing in order to accommodate the movement of the light within the tight confines of the motor yoke.

When it came time to rework the design for everyone else, the only elements that remained the same were the electronics and the face. Everything else was redesigned to create the first generation Boxer.

For the first time, an LED fixture had the punch to compete on set, and compete it did. The Boxer soon found a home on many big Hollywood shoots.

The original Boxer went through a couple of iterations, but the fact remained that it was THE LED fixture with the chops to fill the shoes of both tungsten and HMI fixtures on set. And the fixture could certainly take a beating.

It wasn't long before LED technology advanced and the tried and true Boxer design needed a refresh. In 2013, we completely redesigned the Boxer from the ground up, increasing the light output and efficiency in the process. This newest version of the Boxer continues to be hugely popular for film shoots as well as ENG, motion capture, and high-speed photography.
